II On the Evil of One's Own Will

The Lord said to Adam: "Eat of all the trees, but not the tree of certain knowledge of good and evil."

He might eat, therefore, of all the trees in Paradise, because that would not be against obedience ,

and he would not be sinning even then.

But the one who eats from the tree of certainty of good, takes his own will to himself, and puffs

himself up about the good things the Lord has accomplished in him, and persists in boasting about

it. Thus, at the suggestion of the Devil, he breaks the commandment and tastes the apple of certain

knowledge of evil, and his sin incurs punishment.

Just like kids!

Children are curious about the ‘don’ts’ and very soon discover why they should have heeded mum or dad’s request.

Well Adam had just one ‘don’t’ and it didn’t take him long to join little Eve in the taste test.

Things that taste good sometimes aren’t. Getting away with eating it makes us smug, as though we‘re one up on our parents.

Even when God uses us to do good by helping someone else, then we are likely to claim the whole thought and deeds ourselves thinking we dreamed them up all by ourselves without any help from God.

About now we get a belly ache from eating the fruit and being sick afterwards is just what we deserve for not obeying our parents in the first place!.
